Aleksandras Firsinas joined Azortum in 2024 as a project manager. His primary focus is implementing waste management projects across the Baltic States and beyond. From project sales to installation and commissioning, Aleksandras handles every aspect of project management, including on-site supervision for new sorting lines.

We spoke with Aleksandras about his journey into waste management, what led him to Azortum, and the values that drive his career.

Childhood curiosity sparked a lifelong passion

As a child, Aleksandras loved construction sets. He spent countless hours assembling intricate models of planes and cars from steel and plastic parts gifted by his parents. Some models included electrical components he could control after assembly.

"These were my favorite toys and sparked my early passion for understanding how things work," Aleksandras recalls.

Around age 10, he discovered science fiction books, a passion that continues to this day.

In school, he excelled in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, but his favorite subject was always Astronomy. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, specializing in water and wastewater treatment.

Building a career in Environmental Engineering

Aleksandras began his career in 2001 as a junior project manager at JSC Arginta, focusing on municipal water and wastewater treatment projects. Over 11 years, he managed numerous turn-key projects in Lithuania and Belarus, gaining extensive experience in project execution.

He then moved to Jurby WaterTech, where he implemented two large-scale industrial water treatment projects: one in Lithuania and another for VKG Energia in Estonia.

Completing the VKG Energia project just one day before the deadline remains one of his proudest moments.

However, his most impressive achievement was acting as technical supervisor for the €270 million Vilnius Southern Bypass Project, a complex infrastructure project that involved coordinating multiple teams and advanced construction technologies.

These experiences reinforced his belief in teamwork, meticulous planning, and the relentless pursuit of goals.

Transitioning from wastewater to waste recycling

After years in wastewater treatment, Aleksandras explored new roles at Grundfos, GEA Baltics, and in BIM design. Eventually, he managed a plastic waste automatic sorting line project in Lithuania. This shift deepened his interest in waste management and environmental engineering.

“I was always inspired by environmental engineering, which means saving nature from pollution caused by industrial or household activities. It's an important mission for humanity, and I want to be part of it,” Aleksandras explains.

After completing the sorting line project in 2023, he decided to venture further into recycling. Azortum’s professional and ambitious approach drew him in, and he was eager to apply his expertise to a company that values sustainability and growth.

Teamwork, company culture, and personal goals

Aleksandras thrives on continuous growth and learning. He appreciates Azortum's collaborative culture, where experienced industry veterans who have more than 10 or 20 years of experience share knowledge with newcomers. "Relationships here are not overly formal, and management is approachable. Everyone’s voice is heard," he says.

He believes in delegation and teamwork, knowing that complex projects can’t be accomplished alone. Aleksandras also emphasizes the importance of recognizing colleagues' efforts, big or small.

Professionally, he aims to deepen his expertise in recycling technologies and project management, helping Azortum become a significant player in the global market. Personally, he hopes to raise independent children who can carve out their own futures.

Finding balance through spending quality time

To unwind, Aleksandras enjoys running and playing table tennis. He spends weekends with his family, walking or engaging in water sports. Winter brings skiing trips, and he loves relaxing in saunas or spas. “These moments help me recharge and keep life balanced," he says.

His advice to young professionals is clear: “Commit to continuous learning and strive to be the best in your field. Success will follow.”
