Azortum helps Jämtkraft achieve more sustainable energy production

Through a close collaboration between Jämtkraft and Azortum, the use of recycled wood in energy production is now set to increase from today's 20 percent to a full 75 percent.
Major Upgrade in Östersund
To ensure a more reliable heat supply and increase electricity production, Jämtkraft has invested in a significant upgrade of the combined heat and power plant in Östersund.
Azortum, the main supplier of the turnkey processing line, began its partnership with Jämtkraft nearly two years ago. The shared goal was to boost wood chip production for both existing and new CHP plants.
- "In the upgraded facility, it's possible to increase the use of recycled wood from 20 percent to 75 percent, significantly improving efficiency and promoting sustainable energy production," says Gert Raag, Project Manager at Azortum.
Complete Technical Solution
As the main supplier, Azortum has delivered the entire technical line – including automation and subsystems such as:
- fire protection and suppression;
- compressed air;
- heating and ventilation;
- automatic lubrication;
- water mist systems.
The project had strict requirements regarding safety, maintenance, and documentation. Azortum constructed a PVC building around the technical line, equipped with a smoke detection system in accordance with SBF 110 standards.
"Developing the best possible solutions took more time than expected, but by constantly thinking three steps ahead, we managed to stay on schedule despite minor delays beyond our control."
Most of the line is protected from snow and rain to withstand the weather conditions of northern Sweden. Electrical cabinets are placed in heated and insulated marine containers, and field units are equipped with additional heating elements.
"We also use different lubricants than usual, and the line is equipped with a special ‘winter mode’ to prevent the conveyor belts from freezing," explains Gert Raag.
Azortum's involvement highlights their commitment to practical and efficient solutions for waste management that support energy producers in their sustainability efforts.
- "We strive to continue providing reliable technology that transforms waste into valuable energy sources and contributes to a more sustainable future," concludes Gert Raag.
