Completion of MSW and Packaging Waste sorting line installation in Riga, Latvia

Although progress is made in other sectors, Europe continues to face challenges in recycling plastics from municipal solid waste (MSW). To address this issue, Azortum has engineered and completed the installation of a sorting line in Riga, Latvia, aimed at improving plastic recovery.

The facility can process 30 tons of MSW and 7 tons of packaging waste per hour, increasing the capture of recyclable plastics.

Technology enhances recycling efficiency

The brand-new sorting line in Riga is equipped with screening, air separation, and optical sorting technologies to improve the accuracy of separating plastics from other waste. These systems allow the facility to handle mixed MSW and separately collected packaging, contributing to Latvia’s recycling efforts.

Dmitri Zabirov, Azortum's Project Manager, stated, “The mechanical installation is complete, and we are now in the commissioning phase. We are focused on meeting all project targets and ensuring the system operates as planned.”

Next steps: commissioning and fine-tuning

After the installation, the project is now in the commissioning phase, which involves testing and adjustments to optimize the sorting line's performance. The facility aims to support Latvia’s recycling targets and could serve as an example for other regions facing similar challenges.

Azortum is committed to providing practical, technology-driven solutions to improve plastic recycling rates. The new line in Riga, Latvia, is one example of that commitment. You can find our other previous and ongoing projects by reading our blog or visiting our references section.
